Design the Perfect Bathroom!

Bathroom Design   The contemporary bathroom design is simply defined by its look. Straight clean lines, uncluttered counter spaces, geometric patterns, flowing curves, and hard angles.

When designing a new bathroom there are so many elements to think about including: the functionality, layout, sufficient storage, lighting, and of course the overall visual component.  If you are starting from scratch, I suggest that you write a list of items that are important to you to have in a bathroom.

Most times when designing a new bathroom, we have the luxury of enjoying it afterwards; however, sometimes it’s designed for sale.  Regardless who the end user will be, it’s important to look at it from a real estate perspective, as it will add value to the home.

Here are a few key elements that you should consider when designing a bathroom

Provide a focal point – Keep the space neutral, but use décor to jazz it up to create your own personal style.  Neutral does not suggest that it has to be boring.  A simple way to make your space more exciting is to create a focal point.  Get creative and have fun with it without going overboard and make sure to choose a feature or statement piece that suits the room’s scale. This could be standout mirrors, decorative tile, or selecting a key paint color for the feature wall that is not too wild but adds character.

Make sure it’s functional – Fundamentally, a bathroom must work. That means it should feel natural to use; be easy to clean; and all essentials must be accessible, well-functioning, and suitably lit. Whatever design you adopt, never let style get in the way of function.

Don’t squeeze in too many pieces – Generally most people want a tub, separate shower, his/her sinks, and a toilet.  A bathroom is often designed to fit the smallest space possible, which does not always allow for the best function.  Sometimes you simply have to be realistic about your space!  If your layout will genuinely allow a separate tub and shower, that’s perfect! However, if it doesn’t, instead of trying to squeeze it in, consider combining the two.

Think about the details – Even bathrooms with the most expensive fixtures and elements can end up looking disjointed if the details aren’t carefully considered.  Do you tile the entire wall, half, or none at all?  How much lighting is required? Are the faucets, toilet, sinks, and tub easy to clean while still looking gorgeous?  These may seem like small details, but if you spend the time to consider this upfront, you will be grateful in the end that you did.

Tip

A proper bathroom design should keep in mind that the user needs enough room to stand, dry off, and turn around. A bathroom should be a place to be calm and relaxed. If it’s chock-full of fixtures, it may feel cramped and uncomfortable.
